Characters:

The colour is rufous brown on the back, becoming yellower and paler on the side and pale brown. The tail is likewise rufus earthy colored above yet pale brown. The tail is less than half portion of the length of the body. Thumb is short, a few times clawless, yet more frequently bears a little compacted hook. The ears are short and venture over the exceptionally short fur of the head. The body is 3 to 4 inches long.

Distribution:

It is seen in higher biotopes of central Asia and North America. But it is found in Kashmir and Kulu in India. However it is also found in Tibet and Pakistan nearer to India. Moreover 7 races are found in India- roylei, blanfordi, montosa, albicaudata, glacialis Miller,cautus Hinton and acmaeus Schwarz.

Habits:

Prater in 1971 expressed that Royle's vole are homesteaders from the good countries of central Asia where these animals likewise moved through the Bering straits to the new world and colonized the entire of North America. The vole likes to inhabiting in open uplands and rocky fields covered with coarse grass. At higher altitude it is seen digging small hole in and about near river.

It is a threatened species due to the great destruction of it’s habitat in the Himalaya.
